Fuzzy logic for Image Processing and Computer Vision

University of Bari, Italy

The increasing availability of huge image collections in different application fields has pressed the need for the development of efficient techniques capable of managing and processing digital images. Finding suitable techniques for analysis, classification and retrieval of image data is of fundamental importance today. Classical image processing methods often face great difficulties when dealing with images containing noise and distortions. Under such conditions, fuzzy logic techniques turn out to be effective to address challenging image processing problems that are often characterized by vagueness and uncertainty. The lecture will show the application of fuzzy techniques in image processing, starting from low-level tasks (e.g. contrast enhancement, noise removal,...), passing through mid-level tasks such as segmentation, up to high-level tasks including classification, annotation and recognition.
